Why the
coyote?
Coyotes are scrappy. Predators, though not all that intimidating when you actually see one.
They live in the country and in the middle of major cities. They adapt. They run in packs.
At night, you hear them howling back and forth. From the outside, it sounds like a bunch of coyotes making noise.
In Dan Flores’s telling in Coyote America, those howls serve as a kind of roll call. When fewer coyotes answer, their bodies can respond by producing larger litters. The coyotes don’t know that’s happening. They’re just howling back and forth, but the act itself helps their population survive.
There’s something like that in getting together. Different guys, different walks of life, hanging out and talking about whatever comes up. No agenda. No expectations. Like a podcast without the mics.
We don’t have to make something happen for the time together to do us some good. Most nights, we’re just making noise and enjoying the company.
So we get together and howl.
